The Middle Way

This Middle Way supports the spleen, the body’s largest lymphatic organ. The spleen contributes to the immune system, the digestive system,  and the blood/circulatory system.  Life is about balancing the high and the low, creating the middle way. When there is excess of either, we will feel out of sync, this is true for the spleen. It also stores iron for future purposes, manufactures antibodies for pathogen reduction, plays a role in the quality of cholesterol made in the body and contributes to the reduction of phlegm throughout the body.

The spleen is responsible for increasing drive, focus, nutrient assimilation and groundedness. The spleen is the generator of the body, providing the energy for the adrenal glands, thus issues that relate to low energy may also have their root causes in spleen deficiency according to Traditional Chinese Medicine. With dedicated usage and a supportive diet the spleen will benefit which impacts one’s overall health. Here is a list of what spleen deficiency entails :

  • Digestive Dysfunction: The Spleen is responsible for transporting and transforming food and water. Deficiency causes poor appetite, abdominal distention/bloating, loose stools, and chronic fatigue.
  • Reduced Energy (Qi) and Blood: As the source of Qi and blood production, a weak spleen causes pale complexion, dizziness, and chronic exhaustion.
  • Dampness Accumulation: Failure to properly metabolize fluids leads to “dampness,” resulting in a heavy sensation in the body, excessive mucus, vaginal discharge, and body bloating.
  • Muscular/Tissue Weakness: The Spleen governs the muscles and limbs. Deficiency causes weak limbs, fatigue, and lack of strength.
  • Organ Prolapse: The Spleen governs the upward ascension of Qi. Deficiency can cause prolapse of organs (e.g., uterus, stomach) and chronic diarrhea.
  • Blood Deficiency Issues: Because the Spleen holds blood in the vessels, its deficiency can lead to easy bruising, hemorrhoids, or heavy menstruation.
  • Mental and Emotional Impact: The Spleen is associated with thought and intellect (Yi). Deficiency leads to overthinking, worry, poor concentration, and mental fatigue.
